I've been roaming in and out of Central America and Mexico now for about 20 months now. I can remember being attacked relentlessly by mosquitos and flying insects of all sorts. One of my friends in Cayo used to remark, " You know what the best mosquito repellent is? Tourists!". What's brought this to mind are the complaints of my girlfriend Eunes. Insects are selective in who they target.
Now there is a caveat to this mess. Eunes has been here going on five years. I've been wandering in and out as a tourist for less than two years. However, consistently I'll get up in the morning with not a bite on me and she'll have several. It's not just mosquitos either. It's ALL the rest too. We burn mosquito coils and keep the doors shut as much as possible. It doesn't matter.
Now I'll still get insect bites and recently had a couple of beef worm living in my scalp. Eunes seems to be highly allergic to them as well. A single bite that would an annoyance to me will swell up on her. I've been thinking about carrying an epi-pen for her. My other thought on this is I'm getting bit as much but not have having the initial reaction I had when I first came here. I'm going to ask some physicians and get professional opinions on this one. I'll also dig up the original article I wrote on the subject.
Regards,
Ben
