Mount Thor Expedition

E-mail Print PDF

The Mount Thor Expedition was an attempt at a world record single line rappel during the Summer of 2004. A group of highly experienced vertical cavers traveled during the summer of 2004 for this attempt. Mount Thor is located in a remote area of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic Circle. The expedition lasted over five weeks and eventually failed in it's attempt for this record 4,000' rappel due to bad weather.

The expedition started well and ended badly. I really wanted to be involved in this expedition and passed up on a lot of danger signs. I guess that when someone tells you that he will "kill him if I ever see him in the woods alone" over alleged bad editing, you should back out. Preferably slowly and backing up facing the person in a defensive posture. It's a good thing he was old. Anyway, the tale was told in Sports Illustrated and I got a couple pictures published. It was enough to wet my appetite. This photo gallery chronicles the expedition.
